Detroit Urban Lutheran School is most proud of our Energy Conservation Program.  School building maintenance staff agreed to turn off all lights at night. Teachers agreed to turn off classroom lights when sufficient sun light is available. In addition, the faculty is actively educating students about energy conservation measures in science classes. The “Green Team” faculty consists of one(1) principal, three(3) K-8 teachers, two(2) high school teachers, and (1+)parent(s).

Property Description:

Detroit Urban Lutheran School was built in 1955, with the last major renovation in 1971.  The one story building has approximately 100,000 square feet of floor area.  There are currently approximately 175 students in grades K-12, with 12 teachers.


Case Study:

The Energy Conservation Measure opportunity was to install double pane windows and improve roof insulation. Detroit Urban Lutheran School has a domestic hot water energy conservation measure to reduce the size of the DHW tank and boiler. The faculty is excited about having energy production monitoring software as well as an interactive hallway display. There is much enthusiasm to integrate these and the “Green Jobs” initiatives into the curriculum.
