Recycling is our primary green initiative at Friends School in Detroit. Every week our 4th and 5th grade students collect and sort the school's recycling items as part of their community service requirement. They are very committed to the project and lead the school in this effort. The older students already know the importance of recycling and recently made it convenient for families to begin using more energy efficient light bulbs by selling them at cost at the school. We also have a community garden that is a source of pride for our students. Additionally, we have policies in place such as turning off computers at the end of the day to conserve energy. We try to schedule multiple evening events on the same day so that we do not have to open the building as often.
