Seitz Middle School is involved in many environmental programs. Some of the programs that make us most proud are the programs we feature in our cafeteria. We recycle returnable pop cans and water and milk bottles through local stores or at the local recycler. We also collect a plethora of cafeteria trash such as Capri Sun pouches, Frito Lay bags, cell phones, ink cartridges, wine corks, Kashi boxes and wrappers, granola bar wrappers, etc. Collection bins are set up in the cafeteria as well as the hallway and are collected and cleaned once a week by the students. These items are then boxed and shipped to a company that re-purposes them for items that can later be sold in stores. Since inception of this program in our school we have helped turn over 3,000 pieces of trash into new products. In our classrooms, offices, lounges and the neighboring elementary school we collect paper for recycling. The paper dumpster is located where it is available for members of the community as well.

Property Description:

Seitz Middle School was built in 1960, with the last major renovation in 1991.  It is a one story building with approximately 120,000 square feet of floor area.  There are currently 766 students in grades 6-8, with 35 teachers.

Case Study:

We have had our buildings evaluated by the ReBuild Michigan program in 2004. We also contracted with Siemens Building Technologies to enter into a performance contract in 2006.

We are exploring the possibility of installing a 10 kW photo voltaic array and lighting occupancy sensors.
