Sustainability Summary:

Suttons Bay Elementary-Middle School:

  • has a recycling program
  • has a community garden
  • uses T-8 or CFL extensively
  • participates in Farms to Schools.

We provide the site for the village recycling center (fiber, plastic, metal and glass). Each week, our students gather recyclable materials in the school and deposit them in the bins.

We recently replaced our T-12 lights (magnetic ballasts) with T-5 bulbs (electronic ballasts), linked to motion sensors. Our October 2009 electric bill was reduced by over 10,000 KWH from 2008.

Property Description:

Suttons Bay Elementary-Middle School was built in 1952, with the last major renovation in 1995.  The building has one story, with approximately 101,452 square feet of floor area.  There are currently 451 students in grades pre-K to 8, with 29 teachers.

Case Study:

Current plans for improvement include:

  • replace T-8 bulbs
  • upgrade all of our plumbing fixtures to low volume flush with auto sensor controls
  • insulate roofs, replace old windows, and replace high energy loss walls in our oldest buildings.
