Sustainability Summary:

Wagar Middle School:

  • participates in a recycling program
  • has extensive use of T-8 or CFL lighting
  • has a power conservation policy

The district as a whole believes that it is important for us to do our part in energy conservation and reducing waste. We also believe that it is very important to teach our young people the importance of conservation. Recently, we have been putting more emphasis on identifying all of the areas where energy usage can be reduced. It is vitally important for us to find ways to make improvements which conserve resources anywhere we possibly can, no matter how big or small. Equally important to finding ways to save energy is for us to put in place a plan to continue that work and to make sure we always minimize energy use. Another area of importance is educating students and making them our partners in the conservation of our worlds resources. We believe that what we learn from an energy audit of our school and the training your organization offers could help our entire district in our quest to find ways to conserve energy and resources.

Property Description:

Wagar Middle School was built in 1953, with an addition to the building in 1999.  It is located in Carleton, Michigan.  The school has 2 stories with approximately 88,600 square feet.  Students range from grades 6-8, and there are currently 725 students with 35 teachers.

Case Study:

At this time, we have paper, cardboard and plastic recycling programs in place. All staff members and students actively participate in these programs. The National Honor Society and Student Council have established a cell phone recycling program, along with a program for recycling printer and ink cartridges. Our High School's Green Team is in the process of trying to work with our Middle School to help them establish a green team. When asking the young people, of the types of initiatives that have been established, which one are you most proud of, they say the cell phone program. Not only does it reduce waste but the phones are collected and sent to our country's military personnel serving overseas. By putting forth this small effort of conservation, it also allows some of our country's heroes a way to call their families back home and that makes the effort much more gratifying to our students.
